For the Want of An Artist…

So I have been working on a project very near and dear to me.  It is my first script for a comic book.  A graphic novel, if you will.

Sadly, I have not an ounce of drawing talent.  So please readers, if you know of someone or are someone who would be interested in collaborating with me, drop me a line or leave me a comment.

And just so people know I’m being genuine, here is an excerpt from THE NORMALS:

PAGE  1 (4 Panels)

PANEL 1Top Quarter of the page.  Width of page.  Close up on Chicago pavement.  A purple Converse sneaker, Chucks, in view on the left.  The foot is about to touch the pavement as the character is running.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

Must…keep…going.

PANEL 2 Second quarter of the page. Width of page.  Less of a close up.  Both legs of Sophie up to her knees are in the panel now.  She is clearly sprinting.   Purple chucks slamming the pavement.  Scenery streaking by behind her.   We can now tell she is wearing black tights.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

Can’t give up! Almost there.

PANEL 3  Third quarter of the page.  Width of page. Medium view.  Sophie is in full view now about to be seen bounding up a covered flight of outdoor stairs.  She is wearing a plaid skirt, a plain white blouse and yellow cardigan sweater over the blouse.  Her dark, jet black, completely straight hair is blowing behind her.  Everything is a blur.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

Come on Sophie.   You can do this.  Just…keep…pushing.

PANEL 4 Fourth and bottom quarter of the page.  Width of page.  Wide view.  Sophie has made it to the top of the stairs onto a wooden platform.  To the right of the panel is a shadowy object emitting light from its windows.   Sophie has taken a full body leap, arms stretched out in front of her, arching toward the shadowy object.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

Please oh please oh please oh fucking please.

PAGE 2 (Four Panels)

PANEL 1 Takes up the upper third of the page.  We see she has made her jump and landed onto to the floor of a Chicago Brown Line El Train.  She is sitting with her arms holding her up and her legs askew.   Panting.  Sweating beading on her forehead.  We can finally see that her eyes are very, very blue.  Around her we see the various shoes and legs and other passengers on the train.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

Oh thank god.  Just in time.

LOUD SPEAKER

(Ding Dong)

Doors are closing.   Next stop is Fullerton.  Doors open on the left at Fullerton.

PANEL 2 The first third of the bottom of the page.Sophie is now standing up brushing herself off, straightening her skirt and catching her breathe.  The people sitting and standing immediately around her are staring at her incredulously.

PANEL 3 The second third of the bottom of the page.  Sophie raises her head toward the ceiling and exhales loudly.  The other passengers are still staring at her.

SOPHIE

Whew. Wheeeeeeeeeeew.

PANEL 4 The final third of the bottom of the page.  Sophie notices everyone staring at her and gives them a scowl.

SOPHIE

What?   What?!!!!?

PAGE 3 (Four panels.  Horizontal.  Width of the page.  Same height.)

PANEL 1 Interior of the train.  Sophie is now sitting in an empty seat.  She reaches into her bag.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

I’m not going to be late for work.  I might even have time to grab a coffee.  Oooh coffee.

PANEL 2 Exterior of the train. We can see the entire profile of the car.  Sophie is seen in silhouette holding an electronic tablet in her hand.  Above the train, way in the distance are two dots.  One dark purple and the bright shining silver.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

I cannot wait to see the look on Vera’s face when I walk in.

PANEL 3 Interior of the train.  We see a bird’s-eye view of Sophie and her tablet.  The tablet projects small 3-D images upward that can be manipulated by touch.  Floating in front of Sophie is a list called “TO GET DONE!!!!”   It reads:  1. Don’t be late.  2. Dear God don’t be late.  3. Don’t kill Vera.  4.  Date with Larry (Sola Restaurant – 7 P.M.) 5. Work on portfolio.  6. Go to bed on time dammit!!!Sophie crosses off items 1. and 2.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

Dear lord please let Larry be genuinely funny and not tight pants funny.

PANEL 4 Exterior of the train like before.  The two dots above the train are now larger.  Closer.  Still out of focus.  Sophie’s phone rings.

RING!!!

SOPHIE

Hi Mom…Yes.  I’m on my way to work right now actually…yes…Larry.  Lawrence…MOM!!!

PAGE 4 (Six Panels)

PANEL 1 Top left corner of page.  Interior of train.  Sophie has the phone cradled in the crook of her neck.  She is manipulating a floor plan projected from the table of a living room.  Redecorating.  She uses her thumb and index finger to enlarge the projection.

SOPHIE

Online.  I’m fairly certain he isn’t a stalker.  We are meeting in public, yes.

PANEL 2 Top right corner of page.  Interior of train.  Sophie has pressed her finger against one of the walls of the living room projection. Where her finger has touched a stain of yellow paint moves out from beneath her finger, coating the virtual wall.  Below the wall we see a full palette of colors that Sophie can choose from.

SOPHIE

Mom, I’ll tell you about the date tomorrow.  I have to go I’m working on something.

PANEL 3 Panel runs length of page.  Exterior of train like before.  The two dots from above are now two streaks.  One dark purple, zooming ahead of the silver streak.  The silhouettes of the other passengers have moved towards the windows to stare at the streaks above them.

RANDOM PASSENGER

Oh my god.   Look it’s…

SOPHIE

I will call.

2ND RANDOM PASSENGER

Is that?

SOPHIE

I have to go now.  I’m almost to work.  Yes I’m on time.

PANEL 4 Middle left side of the page.  Close up on Sophie.  Phone still cradled.  Hair has fallen into her face.  She blows it out of her forehead.  Just to the right of her face we see the living room now with completely yellow walls.

SOPHIE

Mom?

3RD RANDOM PASSENGER

(This dialogue bubble creeps slightly into the frame)

Oh shit.  They’re coming this way!!!

PANEL 5 Middle right side of the page. Still in close up of Sophie.  The phone is now in Sophie’s hand.  The tablet out of view.  Her eyes peer down as her face stays forward.

3RD RANDOM PASSENGER

(From Off Panel)

EVERYONE TO THE BACK OF THE TRAIN NOW!!!!

SOPHIE

Let me know…(this is difficult for her) Let me know…if you hear anymore about dad.

PANEL 6 Panel is width of page.  Exterior of the train like before.  All of the passengers, except Sophie have moved to the back of the train car.  Sophie is sitting face forward.  We can now barely see the dark purple form of MAJOR REAPER speeding toward the train.  MAJOR REAPER wears a dark purple, impossibly tight bodysuit.  The outfit has black boots, black gloves to accent it.  Over he face is a black mask covering the top half of his face.  In one hand he carries a glowing scythe  The silver streak behind him has barely come into focus as well.  The silver streak is CAPTAIN DIAMOND.  CAPTAIN DIAMOND wears an impossibly tight body suit.  Around his neck is a huge diamond pendant that glows brighter than anything else on panel.  A silver cape flows behind him, complimenting the light blue color of his body suit.  They are dangerously close to hitting the train car.

2ND RANDOM PASSENGER

Everyone get down!!!

3RD RANDOM PASSENGER

Captain Diamond will save us!!!

RANDOM PASSENGER

Here comes the Reaper!!!

PAGE 5 Two panels.  The top panel is the width of the page.  The exterior of the train like before.  MAJOR REAPER has flown directly over the train car and is leaving the panel in a purple streak. CAPTAIN DIAMOND however is visible, fists in front of him, flying directly towards the train.  His point of impact appears to be about one seat in front SOPHIE.

SOPHIE

(Thinking)

I will have a good day today.

PANEL 2 Bottom panel.  Width of page.   Just a bright flash of color.  Sparks.  Metal.  Cogs coming straight at the reader.  There are various screams and exclamations from the passengers.

PAGE 6  One panel.  The entire page.  We see a straight on shot of the rest of the train car.  The first half of it has been ripped clean off.  At the back of the car in the background we can see all the other passengers huddled and clinging to each other in terror.  SOPHIE sits, rather calmly.  Her seat is right at the front of the remainder of the train car.  Loose cables hang around her, sparking.  Metal and glass surround her.  Her knees are scraped, shoes scuffed.  Her black tights are torn.

SOPHIE

Fucking Supers.
